The Pre-Commit Window
The Pre-Commit Window is Griotta's name for the gap between deciding to do something and doing it, during which the action can still be reversed. It is the moment where an impulse can still be interrupted.
Griotta's own concept, not an established finding. It has no fixed length, and Griotta does not measure it.
Advice arrives before that moment. Regret arrives after it. The Pre-Commit Window is the narrow moment in between, and it is where Griotta puts its pause.
What it is
A decision and the action it leads to do not happen at the same instant. Between deciding to buy and the payment going through there is a gap, however short. During that gap the intention exists, but the action has not yet completed.
That gap is the Pre-Commit Window. It can be very short, easy to miss, and easy to move through without noticing. It is a point where an impulse can still be interrupted before the purchase, rather than regretted after it.
Why it matters
A budget reviewed at the end of the month cannot reach a decision that has already been made. By the time the number is read, the money is already gone.
The Pre-Commit Window matters because it is a place where the decision is still open. Griotta's bet is that a small pause placed inside it is worth more than a large amount of willpower applied afterward. It is a bet, not a measured result.
Examples
- Online shopping. The window sits between tapping Place Order and confirming payment, and on Griotta's reading it has been narrowing for three decades. Removing saved cards or waiting a day are ways of widening it.
- Food delivery. The cart can be built in a minute and the order placed in seconds. The gap between checkout and confirmation is where the decision can still change.
- Reactive messages. A quick reply can be followed by the thought, I wish I had waited. That wish describes a Pre-Commit Window that was crossed too fast.
How Griotta uses it
The Pause Layer is how Griotta acts inside the Pre-Commit Window. It places a short, user-chosen pause in front of the apps where you tend to overspend, so you have a moment before you decide to walk away, plan it, or buy now. You choose the apps yourself, and Griotta never sees your cart, your purchases, or any transaction.
This is one form of spending interception, the practice of interrupting a purchase before it happens rather than reviewing it after.
How it relates to the other concepts
The Pre-Commit Window is the arena. In Griotta's framework, Velocity Bias closes it by rewarding speed. The Friction Dividend is the return a small delay placed inside it might produce. The three describe the same moment from different angles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Pre-Commit Window?
The Pre-Commit Window is Griotta's name for the gap between deciding to do something and doing it, during which the action can still be reversed. It is the moment where an impulse can still be changed.
How long is the Pre-Commit Window?
There is no fixed length, and Griotta does not measure it. For a quick tap it can be very short. For a larger decision that carries more thought, it can stretch to minutes, hours or days. The principle is the same: it is the time between deciding and committing.
Can the Pre-Commit Window be extended?
Yes, in the sense that any added step or wait lengthens the time between deciding and committing. Removing saved payment methods, waiting a day before a non-essential purchase, or naming an emotion before acting each add time inside it.
Why intervene in the Pre-Commit Window?
Because it is the point where the decision is still open. Budgets, lessons and reviews work before a decision or after it. A pause placed inside the window meets the decision while it is still being made. Whether that works better than other approaches is something Griotta has not measured.
Who introduced the term Pre-Commit Window?
The term was introduced by Griotta as part of a behavioral framework for impulse decisions.
